Inspiration
There's always a reason to hack for good and we think that people with visual impairments should not have obstacles in their life, specially when they want to explore a city and be independent. In the team, we are all very passionate about empowering people of all walks of life to achieve more.
What it does
Out proposal consists of a host app and a visitor app. As the owner of a small business, a manager in the corporate world, or a friend trying to host a party, everyone should be able to be inclusive around their friends, family, or new acquaintances. With our host app we provide a way to make your environment blind-friendly without the need of any additional and expensive infrastructure, just a few minutes to calibrate special landmarks or places that you consider important or relevant to people in this new environment. Our visitor app on the other hand promises to be a simple and intuitive interface for a visually impaired person trying to explore a new place. With a beacon transmitter on our host app, the visitor can scan for new places, recognize a place, and be able to navigate through a list of landmarks defined by the host. What we propose is an affordable inclusive solution to enable people to achieve their full potential by providing free and independent navigation.
How we built it
In the spirit of being inclusive we decided to build our project using React-native, a powerful development tool that can work on top of Android and iOS, so that our apps are available for both types of users. We have a web service, a host app, and a visitor app, something that as a team of three we were able to tackle. Our web service is created using Python and Flask, with a mongodb. Both apps are created with React-native.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up React-native is so hard. Localization is also complex when using it for the first time, and without any additional hardware.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our text to speech use and being able to have a working demo of initial tech.
What we learned
React-native is cool but she is a tough one to crack.
What's next for a11y
