Keepsake memory quilts

Fabric and clothing can hold amazing memories; I love taking your special items of clothing and creating beautiful keepsake memory quilts.

Each project is different and unique, and I work closely with my clients to discuss all the options and ensure they get a quilt which celebrate the special memories.

I can use baby clothes, T-shirts or shirts/clothing from a loved one, and make quilts, cushions, bunting, fabric books or hanging hearts.

I love a challenge, so if you have an idea for a special keepsake item please do drop me a message and I’d be happy to discuss.

Below are some projects I’ve worked on recently. No detail is too small for me consider, and my clients are delighted with their special items.

Shirts Quilt for Louise

Louise contacted me to request keepsake items in memory of her Father who has recently passed away. She had kept some of his clothing including a wonderful range of pattered shirts. She asked me to make a quilt for her, and cushion cover and bunting for her Dad’s sister in America.

The patterns on the shirts were fun to work with and I chose a design which looked like picture frames and added a central motif in each one. I was especially pleased with the bunting!

Louise was delighted with the quilt and her Auntie was thrilled with the items too. Louise contacted me a few months later to say there has been a fire in her block of flats (thankfully no damage) and as she evacuated she picked up the quilt on the way – it truly is one of her most precious possessions.

Quilt from Hattie’s baby clothes

Hattie’s mum asked me to make a quilt from Hattie’s 0-12 month baby clothes. There was a beautiful range of pattern and colours, and lots of precious motifs which we wanted to preserve. Hattie’s mum and dad had different visions for the quilt so I spent time refining the design to fit with what they both wanted.

A patterned border (to hide the stains!) was requested. I was also asked to make cushion covers which were gifted to Hattie’s grandparents. Her mum also had a sweet idea for a little fabric book using the left over fabric.

I was sent a video over the summer when it was a hot day of Hattie unable to sleep and ‘reading’ the book to herself! Very adorable.

T-shirt quilt for Mary

Mary’s husband contacted me to request a memory quilt for Mary’s 50th birthday. They had lots of t-shirts and clothing from themselves and their kids and asked for a double sided double bed quilt

I was asked to use purple for the accent colour then pretty much given free reign. The first side had 16 t-shirts in a grid with colourful sashing.

There was an amazing scouting neckerchief in the bag which the family asked me to include, and I couldn’t bear to cut up. So I used this in full as the central motif and added smaller items/badges/motifs around it. Each side had the same sashing/border colours.

The family wrote a birthday message to Mary which I printed onto fabric and added. I included a hidden pocket with the label/washing instructions. The construction of this quilt was a challenge to align both sides of the design, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Hearts and Fabric books for Tracy

Sadly Tracy’s mum died in 2020 and Tracy was unsure what to do with he mum’s clothes. We discussed several ideas and settled on some hanging hearts for Tracy and her Niece, and some fabric books for Tracy’s children.

The fabric books had the letters NANNY made from different items of clothing and also a photo of Nanny with each of the children as a baby (photo printed onto fabric). This is a tangible way for the children to remember their special Grandmother.

Quilts for 2 sisters in America

These single bed sized quilts were made for two sisters in USA. It was fun to work with clothes from America, they were much more vibrant that baby clothes in the UK. Both sisters had worn the clothes so I was asked to spread the designs out over both.

I often recommend softer colours for the border for baby quilts, but the bright colours in the clothes lent themselves to a funky border, so I suggested these hot pink stars. I can add a printed label to the back (or front) of the quilts and in this case I was asked to include the sisters names and DOB.

If you’ve got a stack of clothing sat in a cupboard or drawer that you’d like made into a beautiful quilt do get in touch.
