[Benjamin Ferencz Lecture] Sights, sounds, and sensibilities of atrocity prosecutions: the sensory experience of justice
[Benjamin Ferencz Lecture] Sights, sounds, and sensibilities of atrocity prosecutions: the sensory experience of justice
Justice for massive human rights abuses is deeply intertwined with our sensory experiences—what we see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. These senses shape how atrocities are perceived, remembered, condemned, and ultimately judged by legal systems across the world. From the sights of courtroom proceedings to the sounds of witness testimony, the sensory dimensions of justice play a crucial role in the prosecution and condemnation of atrocities. However, the role of these sensory experiences is often overlooked in discussions about legal accountability and the pursuit of justice.

[Panel discussion] Climate on trial: lessons from the Milieudefensie versus Shell case
[Panel discussion] Climate on trial: lessons from the Milieudefensie versus Shell case
On 12 November 2024, the The Hague Court of Appeal delivered a complex judgment in the Milieudefensie v. Shell climate litigation case, setting aside the groundbreaking 2021 District Court ruling. At issue in the appeal was whether Shell must have reduced its CO2 emissions by 45% in 2030 compared to 2019. The court of appeal ruled that Shell is obliged to reduce its CO₂ emissions, but that it was unable to determine which percentage should apply. The court of appeal therefore rejected the claims of Milieudefensie.
[Conference] Innovative ways to counter terrorism: the role of transitional justice
[Conference] Innovative ways to counter terrorism: the role of transitional justice
The conference will address whether and how transitional justice (TJ) can be used as an innovative way to counter terrorism by analysing the Northern Ireland and Colombian cases. TJ is defined by the United Nations as “the full range of processes and mechanisms associated with a society’s attempts to come to terms with a legacy of large-scale past abuses, in order to ensure accountability, serve justice and achieve reconciliation.” It is based on four pillars: justice, truth, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, which should be implemented holistically to redress human rights abuses. TJ approaches are victim-centred and aim to foster memory and reconciliation within a society.
