Anyone who has played even some basketball would appreciate Shane Battier’s contributions to the success of every team he has ever played with (Feb. 15). Back in the day, the N.B.A. could point to Jim McMillan of the Lakers (not coincidentally the catalyst for the team that still holds the league’s longest winning streak) and Bill Bradley (arguably the “glue” for two Knicks championship teams) as similar players with less-than-gaudy statistics whose sense of where they were on the court made their teams better. We didn’t have Daryl Morey’s math skills to prove it, so it’s good to see that there are now real tools to measure what our common sense told us then was true.
